Climate Parliament - Legislators working worldwide to combat climate Change

25.07.2011

Eine Initiative, die vom Europaabgeordneten Helmut Scholz unterstützt und unterzeichnet wurde. Weitere Informationen unter: http://climateparl.net/home.do

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

You will find below an update on the work of the Climate Parliament. For those not familiar with our work, the Climate Parliament is a global network of legislators working to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. We focus mainly on the new laws and budget priorities that are required to shift the world from fossil fuels to solar, wind and other sources of renewable energy.

In particular, we are working on the challenge of building continental-scale supergrids to combine a wide range of renewable sources into a reliable energy supply. And we are working for village-level mini-grids to bring clean energy to the 1.6 billion people who dont have as much as a light bulb in their homes.

Over the last few years, we have convened a series of 23 international parliamentary hearings, each one bringing together Members of Parliament and Congress from different countries to consider ideas for parliamentary action. Many participants have launched initiatives on their return home. The results range from a new national Energy Fund in Uganda, which has already spent more than 150 million US Dollar on renewable energy, to an India-US agreement for joint research on solar energy.

Some of these initiatives are summarised below, with links to more information on our website at www.climateparl.net.

We are now pressing for more support from the EU Budget to promote renewable energy and new grids both in Europe and in developing countries. And we are collaborating with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to expand our work in parliaments across the developing world.

We plan to keep you up-to-date with the Climate Parliaments progress from time to time. If you would prefer not to receive e-mails such as this one, just click on the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of this message. If you would like to participate in the Climate Parliament, or you are involved in parliamentary initiatives on renewable energy which you would like to share with others, please let us know at info@climateparl.net. If enough concerned legislators around the world press for urgent action, working together with renewable energy industries, investors and citizen groups, there is still a chance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions fast enough to avoid catastrophic climate change.
